Scott Berkun and I have at least two things in common. We both are always striving to improve at our crafts (which in both cases involve communicating ideas and writing) and we both keep notebooks. No matter how many gadgets I carry around I also have a notebook and pen or pencil in my bag. I jot ideas, snippets of others’ ideas, website addresses, lists, character sketches of people I see on the subway, actual sketches of things I’d like to knit … you get the idea. Sometimes these get transformed into projects right away and other times they just sit and wait until I’m flipping through the notebook looking for a fresh idea. As Scott writes in his How to write 1000 words: “Notebooks repel the fear of the blank screen.”
But you have the opportunity, not only to read the results of his musing about writing but you can watch the process in the video. It’s one of those making of the making of the article kind of things, complete with director (or in this case writer) commentary. I haven’t decided yet which I like better, the article or the video.
